The Catherin V. Merrill Foundation offers a summer internship program for college students who are Catholic and want to serve people who are in need in our community.


Twenty full-time positions are available this summer at nonprofit organizations throughout Kansas City. Students are compensated $18.50 per hour. As requested by the Catherin V. Merrill Foundation, this program is for Catholic students who are entering their 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of college in the fall following the summer in which they would intern.

Program Requirements:

  • Work at your organization from May 19 to July 25th
  • Write Weekly reflection papers
  • Attend periodic meetings and two scheduled masses with other interns
  • Allowed to take up to 5 days off (unpaid)

Preference is given to applicants who:

  • Are new to this program
  • Seniors, then Juniors, then Sophomores
  • Have volunteer experience

Through this internship, we hope for you to:

  • Alphapointe Camp Instructor Specialist

    JOB SUMMARY:

    Each summer, the Youth Programs plan and host Technology camp, Adventure Overnight camp, and Adventure Day Camp. Between the three camps, the Camp Instructor Specialist will work hands on in developing a curriculum for each of the three weeklong camps. This position is responsible for assisting in the overall instructional and operational design for each of the camp experiences and working hands on with the youth throughout each of these three camps. 

    The Camp Instructor Specialist will assist the director of the camp, plan, supervise, and implement creative summer camp program ideas that enrich the experience of the summer campers and staff. 


    RESPONSIBILITIES:


    Complete day-to-day administrative tasks for the Youth Programs department.

    Specialize in helping plan and carrying out daily activities as well as ensuring the safety and physical well-being of the campers. 

    Sending and receiving correspondences with the parents of the campers and answering any questions there may be.

    Willing and able to engage with the campers as individuals in a way that allows them to grow at their own abilities.

    Able to revisit and adapt to plans and activities that meet the needs of the group that you are working with.

    Able to be a team player and work well with other individuals.

    Complete evaluations and reports on youth participating in the programs.

    JOB SUMMARY:

    The Youth Experiences Specialist will work with the Youth Services Team and Youth on all of Alphapointe’s Camps and Eye Programs.    Which includes Adventure Damp (Day and overnight), Technology Camp and the EYE programs. 


    Technology Camp is a weeklong learning experience for youth with visual impairments to learn about utilizing various technologies that impact academic development, advance their internet navigation skills, develop social networking knowledge, and establish internet safety and security awareness.


    EYE, Expanding Youth Experiences,  is a program designed for children and youth who are blind or visually impaired, so they can experience an array of opportunities in the community that are fun and interactive. For this you will help plan different events and activities for the youth, while then also working hands during the events.


    For this position, you will be responsible for completing daily administrative tasks, assisting with developing and implementing programs successfully, brainstorming activities, helping ensure programs run smoothly, and working hands on with the youth during these programs. 


    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Completing day-to-day administrative tasks for the Youth Programs.

    Specialize in developing and implementing curriculums and events.

    Sending and receiving correspondences with parents and or organization partners, providing necessary information and answering questions.

    Willing and able to engage with the youth as individuals in a way that allows them to grow. 

    Able to learn and work with unfamiliar software applications.

    Have the patience to help youth learn and grow new skills. 

    Assist with evaluating and making changes to improve programs. 

  • Bishop Sullivan Center Project ElderCool AC Installers Intern

    Inspired by Christian faith, Bishop Sullivan Center shows God’s love to people in financial hardship by providing food, help in finding jobs and other aid. Beyond material assistance, Bishop Sullivan Center strives to build relationships between those who live in poverty and those who do not, promoting mutual understanding and affirming the dignity of all.

    Bishop Sullivan Center’s services include two food pantries feeding 1,200 families a month, One City Café, a community kitchen serving over 300 meals each weekday, Employment Services helping over 400 individuals secure employment each year, Project ElderCool providing air conditioners for seniors, and more. We are proud to be one of the largest providers of household assistance in the Kansas City area and one of the largest distributers of food in the Harvester’s network.

    Bishop Sullivan Center Project ElderCool Intern


    Project ElderCool is Bishop Sullivan Center’s effort to help seniors find refuge from the summer’s deadly heat. In the summer of 1999, 21 seniors died due to extreme temperatures. It was this tragic loss of life that led to the creation of Project ElderCool. Since the summer of 2000, we’ve installed over 5,600 air conditioners for free and kept thousands of senior safe from the heat. The Project ElderCool Intern oversees this program and works directly with our clients who are elderly or have disabilities.


    Primary responsibilities include:



    Installing air conditioners in recipients’ homes


    Being a friendly face and listening ear for seniors


    Interns will need to be able to lift a minimum of 25 pounds and have a valid driver’s license. Bilingual in Spanish and English is a plus.



    This intern may assist with other responsibilities at the Center including the food pantry, household assistance, and our employment program as time allows.  This intern may also spend time assisting at Journey To New Life, a non-profit that helps people coming out of prison. This agency is located just a few blocks from Bishop Sullivan Center.

    Community LINC Community Support Intern


    The Community Support Intern is a key member of the Case Management Team, focusing on improving or organizational efficacy, and support of the Case Management Team and Volunteers of the agency.   • Catholic Charities: Citizenship/English Summer Intern

    Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas’ free Citizenship Preparation and English Language

    Learning (ELL) Programs include course work that is focused on the English language,

    American history and civics knowledge that is needed to pass the United States’ USCIS

    naturalization interview and exam. The summer intern will promote and support the mission of

    Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas and the Citizenship/English Language Learning Program

    with conducting new student outreach, retention, and developing classroom materials. This

    position is ideal for candidates interested in learning about teaching English to newcomers,

    seeking to learn about the naturalization process, lesson development, and serving Kansas

    City’s refugee/immigrant community. There are also opportunities for direct service, including

    tutoring students and leading group activities.

  • Catholic Charities: Digital Inclusion Summer Intern

    The Digital Inclusion program focuses on education and technology-specific case management

    to support refugees in their journey toward full digital engagement with civic life in the United

    States, including the pursuit of meaningful work, education, and social participation. This intern

    position is ideal for anyone seeking to learn about curriculum development and pathways to

    digital literacy for non-English speakers. Interns also have opportunities to practice and improve

    presentation and teaching skills and to engage with technology through technical support and

    device distribution. PowerPoint and Google Slides skills are helpful but not mandatory.

     Helping coordinate classes, client transportation, and interpretation

     Assisting clients during computer class, in-person tutoring sessions, or online (remote)

  • Catholic Charities: Match Grant Summer Intern

    The United States Office of Refugee Resettlement’s Match Grant program aims to help

    refugees (and other appropriate individuals) attain self-sufficiency within four months after

    arrival without access to public cash assistance. The summer intern will promote and support

    the mission of Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas by supporting the Match Grant Program in

    adhering to all relevant program guidelines, which includes assisting with case management for

    program participants and working to eliminate barriers relating to employment, education,

    health, transportation, social adjustment and basic needs with the goal of self-sufficiency,

    economic and otherwise.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    The summer intern will be involved in all facets of the Match Grant Program, including:

     Assist in case management, employment services and budgets for a caseload of

    refugee and immigrants participating in the Match Grant Program

     Ensure participants are well-versed in their Match Grant Program rights, responsibilities

    and financials

     Develop and implement Match Grant Self-Sufficiency and Employment Plans with focus

    on eliminating barriers to self-sufficiency and job placement quickly and effectively

     Refer participants both internally and externally as part of their individual plan while

    serving as a liaison to service providers

     Adhere to Office of Refugee Resettlement and internal guidelines in service provision

    and documentation

     Track the progress of participants in electronic case files, noting any delays in progress

     Scanning and filing of documents as well as other basic administrative functions in

    managing caseload

     Drive to various sites around the metro to deliver checks, meet clients at DCF, help

    clients shop at TurnStyles Thrift, and more

     Request checks and manage grant spending

  • Catholic Charities: New Roots Summer Intern

    New Roots is a training program that empowers refugees, immigrants and English Language

    Learner farmers to develop sustainable farm businesses. The summer intern will promote and

    support the mission of Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas and the New Roots Program in

    providing critical support to farmers looking to grow their small farm businesses. This position

    will spend a significant portion of time outside at the farm or at farmer’s markets and driving the

    New Roots truck (if 21 years old) or your own car to make produce deliveries.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    The summer intern will be involved in all facets of the New Roots Program, including:

     Drive New Roots pickup truck (if 21 yrs. old) or your own car to farmers markets,

    farm share delivery sites, and/ or restaurants to deliver produce

     Assist farmers-in-training with customer interactions and produce sales at farmers

    markets (includes some evenings and weekends)

     Support Program Assistant with collecting produce for online sales, packing orders,

    and making deliveries

     Assist Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Specialist with farm share by

    providing support with online sales software, packing produce, and making deliveries

     Be available at the farm site 4-6 hours/week to support farmers and farm staff

     Provide outreach support to potential wholesale customers, as needed

     Update website and create social media content

     Print, cut, laminate, recipe cards, labels, flyers, etc., and other office tasks.

  • Catholic Charities: Pregnancy Support Services Summer Intern

    Pregnancy Support Services goal is to provide education, support and physical baby items to women

    who are pregnant and parenting their child. The summer intern will successfully promote and support

    the mission of Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas (CCNEK) by providing support to mothers who

    will be parenting their child. Help break the cycle of poverty by providing free support and by helping

    women access low cost prenatal medical care. Provide prenatal and early childcare education and

    support for expecting parents that are low income, refugees, or Wyandotte County residents.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    The summer intern will be involved in all facets of the Pregnancy Support Services Program, including:

     Responsible for intake, assessment and referral of clients.

     Provide support to actively assist clients through pregnancy, including problem solving, goal

    setting, preparation for parenting, and post-pregnancy visits.

     Support clients with connections and referrals for medical services both for the pregnant mother

    and for well-baby visits.

     Assist in meeting client’s needs: medical, housing, financial and school by becoming involved in

    the community. Identify appropriate services available and inform participants of services.

    Make referrals and access resources with or on behalf of the participants. Collaborate with

    CCNEK Family Support programming as needed, in alignment with our self-sufficiency model.

     Support clients with getting connected to WIC both during their pregnancy and after the child is

    born.

     Educate clients of labor and delivery, nutrition, safe sleep, car seat safety, and individual

    education needs.

     Support the program with doing behind the scene projects, which may include sorting baby

    equipment, organizing files, etc.

    The intern may collaborate with another department to accomplish all hours. Possible partnerships

    could include family support centers, refugee, or the thrift store.

  • Catholic Charities: Refugee Resettlement Summer Intern

    The Refugee Reception and Placement Program at Catholic Charities provides resettlement

    services to newly arrived refugees during their first 90 days in the United States. The Refugee

    Resettlement summer intern will successfully promote and support the mission of refugee

    resettlement at Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas through the implementation of services

    focusing on resource development, community outreach, donation and inventory management,

    and housing for newly arrived refugees.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    The summer intern will be involved in all facets of the Reception and Placement (R&P)

    Program, including but not limited to:

     Aid R&P Case Specialists to complete required core resettlement services within

    required timeframes in the medical, housing, employment, basic needs, and education

    domains.

     Document contacts and services provided to clients based upon the needs and goals

    identified in the service plan.

     Maintain client files, including copies of all pertinent documents, and obtain client

    signatures and dates on appropriate forms and receipts.

     Arrange transportation for refugees to attend appointments.

     Arrange interpretation services for client appointments as needed.

     Support Move-in Team volunteers through the housing set-up process.

     Assist in moving refugee families into their homes.

     Participate in organizing, implementing, and coordinating donation pickups.

     Maintain and organize an accurate inventory of supplies for refugees permanent

    housing.

     Assist in developing processes and procedures for housing newly arrived refugee

    families in accordance to the R&P cooperative agreement to better serve new refugee

    arrivals.

  • Catholic Charities: Refugee Youth Program Summer Intern

    The Refugee Youth Program (RYP) Summer Enrichment Program simulates school for refugee

    children to prepare them for a new school year, while also allowing them to have some fun. The

    summer intern will promote and support the mission of Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas

    and RYP by assisting in enrolling students in the summer program, preparing activities,

    supplies, space, developing lessons, teaching classes, and overall support of the program. This

    position is ideal for candidates seeking to learn about the challenges refugees face in accessing

    and adjusting to United States education system. The RYP intern will also participate in direct

    service, teaching ELL classes and meeting with parents to answer questions about school in the

    United States.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    The summer intern will be involved in all aspects of the Refugee School Impact (RSI) Program,

    including:

     Recruit and enroll Refugee Youth Summer Program participants

     Assist RSI team in preparing supplies, schedule, and space for the summer program

     Develop lessons and provide training to volunteer teachers

     Teach refugee parents about the United States school system through workshops

     And other duties as assigned

  • Catholic Charities: Summer Food Intern

    The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is funded by the United States Department of

    Agriculture (USDA) and is operated in partnership with the USDA and the Kansas State

    Department of Education (KSDE). The program is designed to provide kids and teens ages 18

    and under with healthy meals during the summer months when school is out of session. The

    summer intern will promote and support the mission of Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas

    by assisting the SFSP in coordinating and implementing the SFSP in our 21-county service area

    and also by managing a summer food site and serving meals to children.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    The summer intern will be involved in all facets of the Summer Food Service Program,

    including:

     Coordinating food distribution and ensuring sites are equipped for program operation

     Maintaining inventory tracking systems and program reporting

     Working with community partners to build relationships with our food site locations

     Training volunteers on program guidelines and operating procedures

     Conducting site reviews at our various food sites

     Organizing educational and recreational activities that can be implemented at various

    food sites

  • Catholic Charities: Workforce Summer Intern

    Workforce Summer Intern

    Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas’ free Workforce Programs include three programs, The

    St. Rita Program, Employment Services Program, and ReConnect Program. The St. Rita and

    Employment Services programs focus on improving employment outlook through advancing in

    education through a skilled trade program (St. Rita Program) or focusing solely on developing

    career skills (Employment Services Program). Both of these programs focus on helping mitigate

    barriers to employment and gaining livable wage income to help break the cycle of poverty. The

    ReConnect Program focuses on promoting social and civic engagement for

    educational/vocational advancement for refugee youth ages 15-24.

    The summer intern will promote and support the mission of Catholic Charities of Northeast

    Kansas and the Workforce Programs by assisting with identifying new educational and

    employment outreach partners, screening potential clients to participate in programming, and

    assisting ReConnect staff with social and civic activities. This position is ideal for candidates

    interested in helping individuals break the cycle of poverty and serving Kansas City’s general

    population and refugee/immigrant community.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    The summer intern will be involved in all facets of the Workforce Programs, including:

     Identify new potential educational and employer outreach partners

     Assist in screening possible clients for the St. Rita or Employment Services Programs

     Organizing client files to help ensure fiscal year files are in their proper locations

     Assist ReConnect staff in social/civic activities as needed

    Community LINC Administrative Marketing Intern


    The Administrative Marketing Intern is a key member of the administrative team, focusing on improving or organizational efficacy, and communications of the agency. The primary responsibilities will be to assist with our development, and administrative functions. It requires computer skills, preferably a love to research and organize and willingness to self-direct. We would prefer a love of writing and have a creative ability to do so. We will train you how to do different projects and work in our database system.

  • Cross-Lines Community Engagement Intern

    Cross-Lines was established in 1963 as “a place of hope” for those struggling with the hardships of poverty. We are a safety net for our community. We provide direct assistance to at-risk families, the elderly, and single individuals struggling to make ends meet.  The mission of Cross-Lines is to provide people in the Kansas City area affected by poverty with services and opportunities that encourage self-confidence, meet the needs of today, and provide the tools for future self-sufficiency.


    We have three program focuses: Hunger Relief, Housing Stabilization, and Basic Needs Services.  Our Hunger Relief programs include our Food Pantry, Community Kitchen, Senior Food Boxes, and Community Garden. The Housing Stabilization services include Case Management, Rent/Utility Assistance, and Homeless Rehousing Services, and Basic Needs Services include clothing vouchers, Kansas City Medicine Cabinet, toiletry assistance, diaper distribution, and showers and laundry services.

    Coordinate and lead summer volunteer groups. Help with set up, tours, and collecting feedback from groups.

    Develop social media content for various platforms

    Assist with planning the annual Armourdale Community Picnic

    Assist with our annual spring fundraising event

    Research grant opportunities and assist with the grant writing process. Identify other potential community partnerships and opportunities.

    Attend volunteer fairs and select community outreach events.

    Help develop community outreach materials. May include: volunteer newsletter, “how to get involved” materials, “how to run a food drive” materials, etc.

The Don Bosco Senior Center helps seniors age 60 and over, and adults with disabilities, maintain independent living by providing meals, transportation, fellowship, and activities that promote health, education, and recreation. Based on Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) guidelines, the Don Bosco Senior Center is the largest, most comprehensive senior center in the Greater Kansas City area. Through a Meals on Wheels program, Don Bosco delivers an average of 600 hot, nutritious meals each day and serves an additional 180 hot meals onsite at the Senior Center each day.

    The Senior Center intern will assist with a wide range of services to our clients, including, but not limited to:


    Helping Activity Director with educational and recreational activities

    Greeting Seniors as they arrive and registering them for daily services

    Assist with meal or produce delivery to homebound seniors and refugee families when needed.

    Don Bosco Centers Workforce Readiness Intern


    The Don Bosco Center ESL School provides free English classes to adult immigrants and refugees from over 75 countries and vastly differing life situations. Our English as a Second Language Program, through a valueable partnership with the Independence School District, has grown to be the largest in the Kansas City region. Through the utilization of life skills-based curriculum, our program offers eight-levels of English instruction, Workforce Development classes, technology classes, Citizenship Test, Preparation, and High School Equivalency classes


    Workforce Readiness Interns will be placed in the Don Bosco School for English. Interns will work with workforce readiness students, teaching them the skills they need in order to obtain and retain employment. They will also help tutor students in English, Interns will work directly with the Workforce Readiness Instructor on a daily basis


    Hours: Monday through Friday with the earliest starting time being 9am. Interns will not work past 4pm on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday. May work evenings on Tuesday and Thursday.

  • Journey to New Life Re-Entry Specialist Intern

    Journey to New Life assists men and women returning to the community from prison. The program consists of emergency assistance, case management, a transitional house for 15 women returning from prison, and mentoring. The goal is to assist these men and women to become successful and productive citizens and thereby make the community a safer place to live and work. Journey to New Life serves approximately 1,200 clients a year.

    Journey to New Life Re-Entry Specialist Intern


    Interns will learn to be re-entry specialists and assist clients with emergency assistance. They will also accompany the case managers on home visits and housing inspections as well as help the clients with purchasing needed clothing for work, prescriptions, cell phone and medical assistance. During the summer, we have quite a few clients move into their new apartments and the interns are a great support in this. We also acquire a lot of donations of furniture, household items, and hygiene that we collect and then distribute to our clients


    Coordinate with House Managers and Residence Case Managers to connect with clients regarding job hunting, housing, life skills, and budgeting.

    • Tuesdays and Thursdays provide Emergency Assistance with other volunteers at the office.

    • Use Case Worthy database to document clients serviced.

    • Coordinate with Post-Residence Case Manager to develop and facilitate weekly support groups at JTNL office

    • Attend weekly case conference meeting with Post-Residence Case Manager

    • Help clients to appointments (medical, dental, food pantry, employment) as needed

    • Work with Post-Residence Case Manager to coordinate services with area providers

    • Work with clients on practical life skills

    • Assist with client satisfaction surveys and related data collection

    • Engage in continuing education and professional development activities as assigned by supervisor

    • Coordinate with House Managers and Case Managers to assist the client in finding housing. Meet with landlord and conduct inspection and lease signing. Work with client to secure household items that they need in the basement of 3120.

    • Help sort through and organize donations.


    Interns may also help at Bishop Sullivan Center's food pantry and feeding program as it is only a few blocks away.

    Job Summary: As a Youth Programs Intern with a focus on the Summer Transition Employment Program (STEP) and the College Prep Experience (PREP), you will support the Youth Services Team in delivering impactful programs designed to facilitate the transition from school to work and prepare students for college success. You will play a key role in developing, implementing, and evaluating these programs, while also engaging directly with participants to enhance their learning experiences.

    Program Descriptions:

    Summer Transition Employment Program (STEP): An 8-week summer program designed for transitional aged youth (15 to 23) that focuses on work experience, career awareness, vocational skill-building, and personal independence. The program includes job exploration, self-advocacy instruction, workplace readiness training, and work-based learning experiences.

    College Prep Experience (PREP): A 4-week program that prepares students for successful enrollment and participation in college. The program covers enrollment procedures, disability support services, accommodations, FAFSA completion, and other essential transition services, along with college readiness skills and administrative knowledge.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Program Support and Development:

    Assist in the development and implementation of the STEP and PREP programs, ensuring alignment with program goals and objectives.

    Contribute to the creation of instructional materials and tools for job exploration, self-advocacy, and college readiness.

    Participant Engagement:

    Work directly with participants to facilitate their involvement in STEP and PREP activities, providing guidance and support as needed.

    Conduct group sessions and workshops on job exploration, self-advocacy, workplace readiness, and college preparation.

    Administrative Tasks:

    Complete day-to-day administrative duties, including maintaining program documentation, tracking participant progress, and managing correspondence with stakeholders.

    Assist in coordinating program logistics, including scheduling, materials preparation, and communication with participants and their families.

    Evaluation and Improvement:

    Help assess program effectiveness through participant feedback, observations, and performance metrics.

    Assist with making recommendations for program enhancements based on evaluation results and feedback.

    On-Site Support:

    Support and participate in on-site activities and events at both the work site and camp site, including orientation, workshops, and experiential learning opportunities.

    Ensure a positive and supportive environment for participants, fostering their personal and professional growth.

    Qualifications:

    Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with youth and program stakeholders.

    Patience and enthusiasm for working with transitional aged youth in educational and work-based settings.

    Ability to learn and adapt to new software applications and tools.

    Prior experience with youth programs, vocational training, or educational support is a plus.

    Additional Information:

    Interns must stay on site during the Overnight Adventure Camp week. All food and lodging will be provided by Alphapointe.

    Interns are encouraged/directed to observe a full Comprehensive Rehabilitation Assessment (CPVA) with adults to help the evaluation process of the prospective students' abilities to ensure program success.
